You CAN Fix Stupid

What I’m Thinking About: Growing Pains Include Fighting Resistance to Growth

As business consultants, Dan and I step alongside organizational leaders and help facilitate positive change and growth. However, not everyone is ready to grow. We’ve encountered business leaders not ready to learn new ways of doing things even when their team members were ready. Getting past the resistance to and irritation about change took a lot of time and effort for everyone involved.

Why You Might Be Thinking About This: Educating Institutional “Stupid”

“We don’t have the time to fix that.” How much time do team members spend working around something that needs to be fixed because fixing a problem or inefficiency isn’t a priority? One of the most essential leadership skills is problem-solving.

“Well, that’s just the way we’ve always done it.” In the age of on-demand education, free tutorials online, books on business best practices, and access to business consulting, great leaders are continuous learners.

“We can’t afford to do training.” If you think it’s expensive to train employees, consider how expensive it is to retain untrained employees! Investing in employees is smart leadership.

Why It’s Worth Thinking About: Finding Help is the Smart Thing to Do

It takes strength, courage, confidence and humility to keep learning and accept help. After Dan and I worked with one client for a few sessions, he was both excited and relieved to learn new ways of thinking about his role. Another client immediately began implementing small changes in his company and quickly got positive feedback from team members.

A learning leader can truly “fix stupid.”
