Hear Past Your Fear

What I’m Thinking About: Learning to Hear Past Fear

Dan and I don’t have to wait for Halloween to see frightened people and scary situations. Many business owners and leaders reach out to consultants because they are afraid of what might happen.

Speaking fear at work may sound like this:

“What if I lose my business?” “What if I can’t make payroll?” “What if I have to let staff go?” “What if we can’t fix this issue?” “I don’t know how to get more customers.” “If I don’t get 40 new customers in the next 2 months, I may have to close.” “We’re losing business.” “I’m not getting any sleep at night because I’m so worried about the business.”

Yep, those are all frightening situations!

Why You Might Be Thinking About This: Worrying Out Loud is Not the Same as Solving a Problem

Identifying what you’re worried about is a great start. Dan and I want to know what keeps clients up at night besides indigestion and horror movies… What scares business leaders, not just at Halloween but every day?

A big part of our job as consultants is listening to hear past the fear and help business leaders identify possible root causes and contributing factors. By helping clients identify root causes, contributing factors and possible solutions, the conversation shifts from worry to problem solving. Fear of failure shifts to solutions and plans.

Why It’s Worth Thinking About: Embrace FEAR

Your organization may have one or multiple concerns that lead to worrying out loud. Sharing them with a trusted advisor can help you get past worrying out loud to finding and implementing positive solutions. And move from worrying out loud to creating healthy business and business conversations.
