Look Good, Feel Good, Do Good
What I’m Thinking About: Look Good
I dress nicely for meetings. Maybe not formal “suit and tie” nice but in clothing that is flattering, fits well, includes bright colors, and is neither overdressed or underdressed for the situation. Clothes are wrinkle-free, in good repair, and reflect my personal and professional style. Name brand or no brand is fine. No grunge clothes, leggings, yoga pants – I’m not exercising or doing yard work, I’m doing professional work in an office environment.
When I meet with clients or network, my appearance is “put together”, professional and a little playful. The reflection that greets me in the mirror looks good!
Why You Might Be Thinking About This: Feel Good
Last week a client said “I need someone to hold up a mirror to me”. Although she meant professionally, I couldn’t help but notice that she rarely smiled during the meeting, was dressed too casually in all black and had very little to say during an hour-long meeting. Intelligent, well-educated and in a leadership position, her appearance didn’t reflect her résumé. Her appearance said “I’m anxious, weary and uninspired.” Sometimes, we need someone to hold up a mirror to us and help us understand how to reflect success.
The concept of “dress for success” has real impact. There is something about wearing clothes that say “I’m ready to do my best today.”, “I have confidence in myself.” and “I look like I mean business.”, that positively shapes a mental and emotional mindset. A little extra effort to wear cologne, polish worn shoes, press a shirt, or put on a colorful tie or scarf can move us from “I think I can” to “I know I can.” Looking good can definitely lead to feeling good.
Why It’s Worth Thinking About: Do Good
Mirrors don’t just reflect how we look but also how we feel. When I look good and feel good about how I look, I feel better about my ability to do good. I’m more likely to find and say good things about myself, work and others. And I’m more likely to do good work. My energy level is higher, positive thoughts flow more abundantly, and efforts are easier.
Ready to do good? Take a look in the mirror.
