What I’m Thinking About: Sick Culture, Sick Business

“This place makes me ill.” “We have a toxic culture.” “This place is dead.” “We’re dying on the vine.” ‘Profits are in the toilet.” “People are sick of working here.” Heard these at work before? I have. I’ve even said some of them. If this is what employees are saying at work, imagine what they are saying outside of work! And what they’re posting on social media… Does this affect the market place? You bet. As a business choreographer who specializes in culture, I see regular proof that people do business with people they like and trust. If employees don’t like the business environment, they won’t bring clients to the business.

Why You Might Be Thinking About This: Change Your Culture, Change Your Business

“I love my job.” “This place rocks!” “This is the best job I’ve ever had.” “I’m never leaving this company.” “I don’t only work here, I do business here.” Wow, wouldn’t it be great to have employees say and post things like this? Wouldn’t it be great to say them and think them yourself? Team members who love their job and love their company will bring in new business and maintain existing customer business. And they’ll bring their best effort to work.

How can you create a healthy work culture? Well, here’s some simple ways wrapped in a good IDEA:

I – Involve employees. Involve them in problem-solving, planning, goal-setting and visioning. And, whenever possible, delegate work, projects, and activities.

D – Develop employees. Provide professional development, job-specific training and team-building. And, support continued post-secondary education efforts.

E – Encourage employees. Praise, incentivize, gamify activities, provide constructive feedback and acknowledge efforts. And, encourage employees to give company leadership feedback.

A – Appreciate employees. Reward individual and group efforts, have team and company-level celebrations, acknowledge efforts face-to-face and on social media. And, say “Thank You”.
