Stop Whining, Start Winning!
What I’m Thinking About: Negative Nellies Making Too Much Noise
Ingratitude often sounds like “I don’t know why I have to do that. It’s so boring.” “We have a dress code. It’s so stupid.” “My computer is so old. It’s like 4 years old.” “We have to start work at 7:15 a.m. I’ve got to find another job.” “We wear the ugliest uniforms.” “I’m on call this weekend. I hate having to check in 3 times a day.” And on and on. And on. Grumbling drowns out the good that happens in the work place – skill development, company success, team trust, promotions, sales, profitability. And on and on.
Why You Might Be Thinking About This: Bad Thoughts Are Bad for Business
The daily grumbling and complaining can be emotionally toxic and prevent individual and company success. Negative Nellies and Bad-Mouthing Bobs drive away talent and customers. I’ve never worked with or in a company with values like: complaining, grumbling, whining, fussing, fuming and grousing. But I’ve sure experienced enough of that behavior in the workplace. On the contrary, many companies have values like respect, politeness, friendliness, good attitudes, positivity, and selflessness. Positive thoughts can energize the work place and facilitate team work and success.
Why It’s Worth Thinking About: Our Attitude Determines Our Altitude
What we allow, we teach. Let me say that again. What we allow, we teach. If we want positive attitudes at work, our job as leader is to model it, encourage it, and reinforce it. And to not tolerate negative attitudes.
When whining prevents winning, it’s time to beat down the work whining! Does your company have values like respect, politeness, friendliness, accountability, enthusiasm, confidence, positivity? If not, consider adding them and including personal attitude on employee feedback forms, performance reviews, on job descriptions, on the company walls. Hold people accountable for not just job skills but for their attitude.
How about making gratitude a company value?
