Getting Out of the Rocking Chair
What I’m Thinking About: Going in the Right Direction
Business planning is all about deciding to move forward in the “right” direction. When working with businesses, Dan and I help the business leaders envision the future and a big part of that is deciding what “right” looks like. What percentage of profit does an organization needs to make? Who or what is the “right” customer? When is the “right” time to introduce a new product or service? These are decisions that help a business move in the right direction. Once a business knows does the research and has conversation to answers to these questions, it’s time to take a step forward.
Why You Might Be Thinking About This: Not All Motion is Forward
“Worry is like rocking chair. A lot of movement but none of it forward.” This grandmotherly advice fits the business world well. Time after time Dan and I hear business people worry out loud, “What if this doesn’t work?” “What if our employees don’t like this?” “What if growth means hiring another employee? This isn’t in the budget.” This type of thinking prevents moving forward. Organizations get stuck in place, unable to move forward out of fear over what could happen.
Why It’s Worth Thinking About: Getting Out of the Rocking Chair
Worrying out loud is not the same as making a business decision. Once a decision is made based on input and data, take a deep breath and move forward. You may make mistakes along the way but at least you’re not stuck in place. Move forward or get left behind.
