Get Out of the Weeds!
What I’m Thinking About: Weeds Get in the Way of Growth
This week I spent about 8 hours pulling weeds out of garden areas. Weeds grow shallow roots and spread quickly, taking up the space and energy needed for plants with deeper roots need to prosper. As my fingers worked the soil, my mind worked through client issues rooted in negative thoughts and behaviors that prevented organizational growth. And I realized that pulling weeds is a necessary, albeit time consuming and often dirty, job of a leader.
Why You Might Be Thinking About This: Leaders are Weeders
“I don’t want to learn the new software. It’s going to take too much work. I’ll get to it when I get to it.” “My boss always gives the good contracts to him. I get the garbage contracts. Well, garbage in, garbage out.” “Nobody can see my screen. I’m tired of working. I’m going to play solitaire.”
Apathy, passive aggressiveness, wasting time at work. These kinds of thoughts and behaviors stop people from doing their best to create success. And from growing in their abilities to lead themselves and others. When we weed out negative thoughts and behaviors, we make room for positive growth in people, teams and business.
Why It’s Worth Thinking About: Pull Some Weeds!
Call people on under-performing, passive aggressive behavior, and wasting company time. Your face may turn red, your voice may quiver, your hands may shake. Do it anyway. And do it in a respectful, positive way that helps undercover root issues for the behavior and plants the seeds for employees to learn how to voice issues and concerns in a respectful, positive way. Removing negative team member thoughts and behaviors creates room for growth - for the employee, the team and the company.
